Guided Fishing and Hunting with Feather & Fly
down the Toccoa River in North Georgia
|
The Toccoa River starts in Union County, Georgia, flows north and west through Fannin County, meandering through
some of the most breathtaking mountains in the country. It is fed by smaller yet productive trout streams such as
Cooper's Creek, Rock Creek, Stanley Creek, Noontootla Creek, Hemptown Creek, and Hot House Creek just to name
a few.
The Toccoa holds a lot of trout: Browns, Rainbows, and Brookies. The trout run between 4" and 34" easily. The
average trout runs 12"-14". This is the stream that Feather & Fly's owner, Mike Stewart, grew up fishing as a child
and teenager. It's where he caught his first trout on a fly, and it is special to Mike and his family.
The upper section of the river, from Shallowford Bridge upstream for about 1.2 miles has recently been designated as
"Delayed Harvest" section, and has been stocked with all 3 species of trout. The delayed harvest is in place from
September to May, and many of these fish survive as hold overs and eventually take on the attributes of a native.

The tailwater section of the Toccoa, starting at Blue Ridge Dam and running north to McCaysville, GA, is probably
our best trout fishery in the Southeast. There are more trout in this 13 miles of river as in any western trout water.
And there are a lot of real trophy fish in this section. However, public access is difficult due to private land
ownership. Therefore, drift boat trips are the best way to fish this section.

The staff / guides at Feather & Fly are the best when it comes to getting their customers on fish at the Toccoa,
especially when it comes to the big boys. We land a lot of fish in the 15"-22" range, and the occasional lunker will fall
to a lucky or skilled customer. This section of river is one of the healthiest and food enriched in the Southeast, and
probably in the country. A guided trip with Feather & Fly will be rewarding and almost always very productive. We
routinely have 60+ fish days, and have had several 100+ days.
Drift Boat Trips Down the Elk River, below Tims Ford, near Winchester, Tennessee
The Elk River is a smaller, slightly slower, yet very cold tailwater fishery. The Elk is tricky, but can be very productive,
with trout ranging btween 4"-25". This river is heavily stocked, heavily fished, but due to it's seclusion as a result of limited
public access, has a reputation for trophy trout just a few thousand yards from public access. This is specialized fishing,
midges, selective streamers, and targeted wet flies. Stealth is a must. Austin is our stealth guru for the Elk. Let Austin
introduce you to the Elk. Click here for a Topo Map of the Elk Tailwater →
